Chicken shawarma is a Middle Eastern cuisine that has been adopted by Nigerians and given a Nigerian twist. It has become a popular delicacy sold in many Nigerian fast food restaurants.
Nigerian shawarma is usually made up of marinated thinly sliced grilled meat of your choice. Combined with assorted vegetables(cabbage, cucumber, bell peppers e.t.c) folded in a tortilla wrap or flatbread.
The smoky aroma of chicken shawarma reminds me of Lagos. Making it one of the delicacies on my “to eat meals” whenever I am in Nigeria.
Our kids had a taste of this street food the last time we visited Nigeria. They loved it and wanted me to replicate it when we returned to the UK.
I like that this recipe is versatile and can be made with chicken, beef, lamb, and even leftover Christmas turkey. You can also throw in any leafy vegetable, but trust me it’s better with cabbage.
Try prepping the vegetables so it’s easy to make, especially when you are pressed for time while working from home and homeschooling the kids. This works for us all the time.
Chicken shawarma is a hit in our home and a great addition to our birthday food table. It is also easy to teach the kids how to make Nigerian homemade chicken shawarma.
Try making it with the kids using this easy recipe. Enjoy!
