My daughter Kamsi turned 16 in January, and we decided to have a low-key 16th birthday celebration. Given that January can be a tough month. Plus, living in a household where we have two birthdays and one wedding anniversary in January. In addition to having her close friends in Liverpool, where we used to live.
Kamsi decided that a party would not be suitable and opted for an intimate affair in a nice restaurant. We wanted to make this milestone birthday memorable, but affordable.
We started by discussing how many friends she wanted to invite to the “meal,” as teens call it. Kamsi decided that she wanted five of her close friends to attend. She chose a beautiful Italian restaurant in a quiet suburb of Liverpool and for the meal to start at 2 p.m. We then went ahead to book the table and she sent out invites ( or shall I say, created a Snapchat group), and voila, our low-key 16th birthday celebration was good to go!

Hubby and I usually set the scene for every birthday in our house by decorating the lounge. We use balloons, banners and generally make a big show of the birthday presents. We do this so the celebrant will be pleasantly surprised when they walk into the lounge! Even though this is now a family tradition, our children still act surprised when they see the decorations and presents.
We try to switch up the decorations every time. But we love decorating using large foil number balloons that you can get in every big supermarket. Birthday balloons remain one of my favourite party decorations. Birthday balloons come in a variety of colours, styles, and sizes. But it’s hard work to do a balloon assembly yourself. I remember that it took hubby and I about 2 hours to set up a balloon assembly for Kamsi’s 13th birthday during the lockdown.

Birthday Breakfast With Family
Birthday breakfast with the family is one of my favourite things to do for every birthday. I would either start the day by surprising the celebrant with their favourite breakfast in bed. Or, If it’s a non-working day, I would plan a big breakfast with the family.
If you are planning a sit-down breakfast with the family, then pull out the stops by using a nice tablecloth and dinnerset to make it appear elegant. The celebrant can open their presents during or after breakfast. Whatever you choose, capture this on camera and create beautiful family memories!
Restaurant Meal With Friends
Kamsi said she enjoyed her meal with her friends because it was an intimate affair with a few close friends. This set-up enabled them to talk and catch up on old times. I dropped her off at the restaurant with the birthday cake and number balloons. I left as soon as her friends arrived and came back later to pay the bill and pick her up.
Before I left, I handed the cake and candles to the waiter, who brought it out when Kamsi was ready to cut it. A lot of restaurants would offer this service, They would also decorate the table and sing Happy Birthday to the celebrant. If you book ahead of time, most restaurants are attentive to ensuring the day is extra special for the celebrant.

Birthday Photoshoot
A birthday photo shoot is another amazing idea for a low-key 16th birthday celebration. You can either use your phone or get a professional photographer. Meanwhile, taking the pictures yourself will work out cheaper, and you can buy a powerful light to illuminate indoor pictures.
You can use a professional camera if you have one. However, I wouldn’t worry about that, as many smartphones take fairly decent photos. Whatever you do, don’t forget to have fun doing it.
House Party with Close Friends
Birthday house parties are one of the most affordable ways to host a low-key 16th birthday party. However, you have to ensure that this is limited to only close friends so this doesn’t turn into a big party with many gatecrashers.
Parental supervision is a must for these parties because they are only 16. You want them to be safe and leave your home in one piece.
For food, I would recommend having a buffet of hot and cold food with desserts. I love having a sweet table for parties. After all, what’s a party without a sugar rush! For the sweet table, you can get a candy buffet set from Amazon and a collection of jars, thongs, and sweet bags to put your sweet in.
